MSIC stands for Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification. It’s a 5-digit code used to classify different types of businesses in Malaysia. The code is issued by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
Think of it as your business’s official “category tag”—— it tells the government and relevant authorities what kind of activities your company is involved in.
Why Is the MSIC Code Implemented？
Having the correct MSIC Code is important because it’s used in:
- Company registration (especially when setting up a Sdn Bhd)
- Tax filing and compliance with LHDN
- e-Invoice registration (a requirement for businesses)
- Industry statistics and data collection by the government
If your MSIC Code doesn’t match your actual business activity, you may face delays or issues in the future.
How to Check Your MSIC Code?
It only takes a few minutes to check your MSIC Code online:
- Go to the DOSM e-MSIC Portal: msic.stats.gov.my
- Select the type of business activity from the drop-down menu.
- Click Search to find the corresponding 5-digit MSIC Code.
That’s it—— once you have the code, you can use it for business registration, tax matters, or e-invoicing setup.
Do Sole Proprietorships Need MSIC Codes?
If you’re running a sole proprietorship or partnership, you don’t need an MSIC Code. Instead, you’ll use a Business Code when registration or filling information.
