The recently announced ASEAN Startup Awards recognizes the most impactful and innovative businesses in the 10 ASEAN countries.

Boss Boleh Founder Honored with “Founder of the Year” Award

A number of Malaysian entrepreneurs stood out, including Angie Ng Pey Hiong, Co-Founder and COO of Boss Boleh Sdn Bhd, who won the Founder of the Year award.

Boss Boleh is a company that provides one-stop cloud-based secretarial services. The company was established in March 2021 and users can enjoy cloud secretarial services by simply clicking on the bossboleh.com website. Through the cloud secretarial service, users can register online as an SSM-recognized Sdn Bhd company, sign documents online using digital signatures, and store SSM documents in the cloud and access them anytime, anywhere.

Global Cerah won 3 awards

Another “Founder of the Year” winner is Willie Ng, Founder and Executive Director of Global Cerah, an Agri-Tech startup based in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, founded in 2021. The company alleviates Malaysia’s food cost crisis by converting agricultural waste into high-protein animal feed and enhances biodiversity and food security through sustainable solutions. The company exports its products to the United States and Europe and has factories across Asia.

Global Cerah also won the Startup of the Year, Best Newcomer and Best GreenTech awards, making it the most awarded company in Malaysia.

Also honored with the Startup of the Year Award was PolicyStreet, the first KNB-approved online insurance platform and InsurTech company in Malaysia, which was founded in 2016. The company partners with more than 40 insurance providers to offer a comprehensive range of products and services, including embedded insurance, customized employee benefits, financial consulting and insurance aggregation. PolicyStreet is backed by the National Treasury Holdings (KNB) and serves more than 5 million customers with more than US$10 billion in insurance coverage.

3 Companies Receive “Best Incubator and Accelerator” Awards

1337 Ventures, GrowthCharger and Sunway Innovation Labs (iLabs) won the Best Accelerator/Incubator Program award.

1337 Ventures is a venture capital firm that helps startups achieve rapid growth. The firm launches quarterly gas pedal programs to help startups understand their customers, products and markets.

Founded by a group of veteran venture capitalists, private equity managers and entrepreneurs to help startups accelerate their growth, GrowthCharger partners with multinational corporations and government agencies to drive innovation across more than 10 vertical industries. The company has several gas pedal programs such as Cyberview Living Lab Accelerator (CLLA) and Selangor Accelerator Programme (SAP), from which a total of 158 startups have been successfully incubated and accelerated their growth.

Sunway Innovation Labs (iLabs) is a non-profit organization that brings together three organizations – Sunway Group, Sunway University and Sunway Ventures – and combines the strengths of industry, academia and government agencies to help Malaysian tech companies grow rapidly. iLabs uses the strengths of the company’s network of contacts to help entrepreneurs find ways to market their products and services. iLabs’ partners can also benefit from iLabs’ activities to find professionals or technology products that meet their company’s needs.

Two companies received the “Best Venture Capital” award

1337 Ventures and Kairous Capital were both honored with the “Best VC” award.

Comprised of a group of investment professionals with over 30 years of experience in venture capital and private equity in Greater China and ASEAN, Kairous Capital is Asia’s premier cross-border investment partner, acting as a bridge between Southeast Asia and China. The firm’s primary investment philosophy is to invest in Chinese technology companies and bring the technology and expertise of Chinese companies to Southeast Asia.

2 Companies Awarded “Best Shared Workspace”

The winners of the “Best Co-working Space” award are WORQ and Common Ground Worrks Sdn Bhd.

WORQ has the largest shared office space in Kuala Lumpur’s Central District at Menara 1 Sentrum Building and achieved 80% occupancy shortly after opening. Founded in 2017, WORQ has managed to raise RM23 million in just 6 years and has catapulted itself to become one of Malaysia’s market leaders in shared office space. It aims to expand its office space to 3 million square feet by 2030.

Common Ground has 14 shared office spaces across Malaysia, located in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor Bahru and Penang. Since opening its first store in Malaysia in March 2017, the company has been aggressively expanding and now has three shared office spaces each in the Philippines and Thailand.

Three Companies Receive “Best of Health Tech” Awards

The winners of the award “Best HealthTech” (Best HealthTech) include Diet Ideas, SafeTalk and Twystor.

Founded in 2019, Diet Ideas is a health tech company whose mission is to improve non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension through a nutritious diet. The company’s flagship program, MyDietProgram, offers 21 personalized plans for people with diabetes, obesity and other diseases. The company has launched an app that allows users to take a free nutritional assessment, find popular nutritious meals near them, and purchase a range of healthy foods or exercise equipment online.

SafeTalk is a cloud-based platform designed specifically for mental health professionals, including therapists, counselors, and psychologists. SafeTalk digitizes and automates client records, appointments, payments, and more, making practice management more efficient and secure. SafeTalk also helps users save time by eliminating repetitive and tedious tasks from their workflow.

Twystor is a customer-centric AI platform that seamlessly connects customers with healthcare providers. Twystor offers innovative customer engagement, provider engagement, and incentive solutions that drive rapid enterprise growth, especially in the direct care space. The official Twystor website is in the development phase and is not yet officially live.

DefinityLegend – A Revolutionary in the Gaming Marketplace

DefinityLegend won the Best Web 3.0 Startup award.

DefinityLegend is a revolutionary platform that has transformed the gaming market. With the platform’s cutting-edge technology, even people with no coding skills are able to design their own games and generate passive income from them. The platform provides endless opportunities for millennials and gamers of all backgrounds to make games both educational and profitable. The platform was created in collaboration with BITTO and DeFinity Studio, a team with over 20 years of gaming expertise and 10 years of cryptocurrency and blockchain experience.

2 Entrepreneurs Receive “Diversity Role Models of the Year”

Two entrepreneurs were awarded the Diversity Role Model of the Year, Dr. Fairoza Amira Binti Hamzah and Mr. Seth Siek.

Fairoza Amira is an outstanding AI expert. Currently, she leads the AI engineering team at MYE.G. Services Bhd (MYEG), an e-government solutions and services provider. In addition, she founded Women in AI Malaysia (WAI Malaysia), which is accredited by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and has expanded to more than 1,200 people. She also co-founded Ever AI Technologies, a no-code machine learning platform.

Fairoza Amira Binti Hamzah

Seth Siek is the Chief Product Officer (CPO) of Omnisol Health-Tech, a strategic advisor to Honeynec Consulting, and the founder of Twystor, a healthcare consulting firm specializing in end-to-end Electronic Health Record (EHR) solutions, spanning physicians, inpatient and outpatient care, dental, labs and pharmacies. In addition, Honeynec Consulting is a firm specializing in financing strategies for startups.
