Malaysia Ups Minimum Wage to RM1,700!

Minimum Wage Order 2024 Gazetted

The Minimum Wage Order 2024 was gazetted on 4 December 2024 and it will come into force in two phases.

PHASE 2 (Starting 1 August 2025): the minimum monthly wage of RM1,700 will apply to ALL employers regardless of number of employees.

How will this affect you as an employer?

This requirement is applicable to all employers in Malaysia.

If you fall under the Phase 1 category above, then you need to ensure the following are in order:

  1. Review all employees’ salary to ensure their minimum wage is at least RM1,700.
  2. If you are paying employees on daily or hourly basis, make sure the minimum wage is as follows:

If your employee is not paid on a basic salary but is paid a salary only based on piecework, tonnage, assignment, journey or commission, the monthly salary rate payable to the employee shall not be less than the current monthly minimum salary of RM1,700.

The breakdown of the minimum wage rates by monthly rate, daily rate and hourly rate is as follows:

The Minimum Wage Order 2024 represents a positive shift towards ensuring fair pay for workers across Malaysia. By progressively implementing a standard minimum wage of RM1,700, it promotes better financial security for employees while encouraging equitable growth across industries.

Employers are encouraged to review and adjust their pay structures to comply with the new regulations, ensuring a smooth transition as both phases take effect. This policy not only safeguards workers’ rights but also contributes to a more balanced and sustainable economy for the future.

A fair wage benefits everyone — businesses, workers and the nation as a whole.
